CHINA TO "RENT" RUSSIAN LAND LONG TERM.... and once the flag is raised??

"A Chinese firm is in talks with Russia about renting up to 115,000 hectares (284,050 acres) of land to grow crops and rear livestock in eastern Siberia."

RENT?? 49 YEARS

"the Chinese "require a government security and special favours, special conditions, such as giving them some territory".

Huae Sinban Company, Zoje Resources’ wholly-owned subsidiary from Zhejiang province, has inked an agreement to lease 115,000 hectares (1,150 sq. kilometers), of them 65,000 hectares of wasteland and 50,000 hectares of pastures, in a region close to the border with China and Mongolia in Russia’s Transbaikal region, Chinese People’s Daily reports.

" The lease payments will be a nominal 250 rubles (less than $5) per hectare per year, or about 1.409 billion rubles (approximately $26 million) over the 49-year period. "  LInk

Putin the Dictator

(sounds a little like Team Obama/Holder/Sunstein)

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin targeted those who dare oppose him Tuesday, introducing draconian new fines for protesters and handing out Kremlin jobs to widely detested lieutenants despite the public anger they have generated." LINK

Love me or pay the fine....

"A demonstration of at least 20,000 people the day before Putin's May 7 inauguration turned into a fierce battle with police after some protesters tried to march on the Kremlin. Scores were injured in clashes and hundreds were detained as police chased opposition members around the Russian capital.

Putin's opponents sought to maintain momentum by holding a series of protests in downtown Moscow, but police quickly dispersed them.

In a move to rein in the opposition, the new bill raises fines for joining unsanctioned rallies from a maximum of 5,000 rubles ($160) now to 1,000,000 rubles ($32,250)."

Government Guaranteed Health Care ... Can Kill You!

Russia's Deadly Hospitals

"Free medical treatment is guaranteed under the Russian Constitution, but outside Moscow, the right to health seems to be reserved for those who can pay for private care. In some hospitals, lifesaving equipment dates back to the Soviet era, and air conditioning is a rarity -- even after 11,000 Muscovites died in a heat wave last year. In 2007, horrifying reports of child abuse surfaced. Orphaned infants left in a hospital in the central Russian city of Yekaterinburg had their mouths taped in order to muffle their cries. Babies are often tied down in their cribs in understaffed hospitals. A hospital near Moscow made headlines in 2009 when two orphaned girls were repeatedly attacked by a large rat running loose in the ward. Prison hospitals are infamous for refusing adequate treatment, like one in St. Petersburg where 30 inmates perished in a six-month span this year. " The Right Link

The Herrickreport.com has repeatedly asked that question. China needs land and the Russians need ......... Russians.

".... Moscow tries to figure out how to maintain its control over this strategic part of Russia in the face of a declining population and a rising China."

"Of China's total population of 1.3 billion, at least 100 million inhabit the three provinces of Manchuria, directly adjacent to Russia. This means that Manchuria already has a population density 62 times greater than the Russian Far East. This vast disparity between the neighbours, unmatched anywhere else in the world, can only grow in the years ahead."

Only 8 Russian Strategic Missile Subs Fit for Sea

"Submarines of the Delta-III class are being gradually decommissioned. About eight [strategic] submarines in total are considered combat-ready," the analyst said.

He added that two Typhoon class submarines, the Arkhangelsk and the Severstal, remain in reserve at a naval base in Severodvinsk in north Russia, but they are not fitted with missiles and need further repairs." Link

Editor's Comments

The attack on Georgia is the Kremlin/KGB/FIS way of reminding the West that they may have lost the Cold War and their empire but what was lost can be regained. 140 Million Russians are still a powerful force. The Baltic states should be building their defenses; Col. Putin has begun to reclaimed lost "glories" and how many people he murders will not keep him awake at night. Europe will have to ask how much do they need Russian gas and the Russians believe they need it bad enough to let them regain the Evil Empire.  Posted Link

Biden ... on the Russia Republic

"Russia has to make some very difficult, calculated decisions," Mr. Biden said. "They have a shrinking population base, they have a withering economy, they have a banking sector and structure that is not likely to be able to withstand the next 15 years, they're in a situation where the world is changing before them and they're clinging to something in the past that is not sustainable." Link

Despite Russia's economic and geopolitical difficulties, Mr. Biden said, Moscow could become more belligerent in the short term unless the U.S. continues to treat Russia as a major player on the international stage. He said Russian leaders are gradually beginning to grasp their diminished global role, but that the U.S. should be cautious not to overplay its advantage. Link

Russian Patrol Boat Sinks Chinese Merchant Ship!

"The border guards fired warning shots, but when the vessel still refused to stop more direct shots were fired. According to video footage shown by Internet media in Vladivostok, Russian border guards fired a total of 515 shots at the vessel's bow. When this had no effect, they requested permission to open fire on the stern.

The Chinese ship owners have accused Russia of breaching international maritime law. The owners said in a letter that Russia's actions were not only "an awful violation of international law but also a cruel violation of human rights."

The Politics of Declining Oil Prices..

"Since Vladimir Putin ascended to power in 2000, petrodollars have been the key lubricant for Russia's authoritarian regime of "managed democracy." Easy money from energy exports has enabled the ruling elite to purchase the political loyalty of the country's sprawling bureaucracy, to win at least the passive consent of a critical mass of the population, and to buy friends and intimidate enemies abroad.MORE

It is far too soon, according to most analysts, to say that Russia is on the brink of serious political instability, or even close to it. And nobody is suggesting that Russia is on the verge of disintegration. MORE

But with the regime's essential lubricant slipping away, the system Putin built is beginning to show signs of strain." MORE

Russia shrinks! China Grows!

"Demographics is an acute problem in Russia, and it's discussed by everybody," Ms. Zhabko said as she put another dish of meats and cheeses on the table.

"More and more immigrants will come to Russia and they will bring their own culture," Ms. Zhabko continued. "Russian culture will disappear. This is the most horrible vision I can imagine. We are one of the ancient, rich cultures of the world, and we could just disappear." Link

Putin moves to become Stalin-Lite ... "Putin not only has crafted the prime minister's post into a more powerful position, but he wants to return to the presidency -- and have fewer vocal enemies, too. Carefully laying out the groundwork for the extended Putin regime of the future, pro-Kremlin Duma members have handily advanced a bill that could categorize dissent as treason - disrupting the "constitutional order" of the country, for one. And a bill has already been passed eliminating jury trials for treason suspects."  Link

Chinese Criminal Triads Bring

"Law and Order" to Russian Far East

"Chinese gangs control many of the casinos in the region (there are more than a dozen gaming establishments in the Vladivostok area), many Chinese restaurants, and even some Russian hotels and eateries. Many small-time Russian gangsters now work for the Chinese syndicates, either as contacts for local business deals or as security guards at the casinos. The nature of the relationship between local Russian criminals and the Chinese crime bosses is not clear, but it seems that the Chinese are far better organised, and therefore have the upper hand.

The only area which the Chinese do not dominate is the local drug trade, which is still in the hands of Tajik, Kazakh, Chechen and other Central Asian criminals, who bring in heroin from Afghanistan. According to the local police, only ephedrine and small quantities of Southeast Asian heroin are smuggled in from China and North Korea. On two occasions--in 1994 and 1999--North Korean intelligence agents and government officials were caught trying to smuggle Southeast Asian heroin and opium into the Vladivostok area.

Many of the leaders of the indigenous Russian organised crime groups that previously dominated the region have been killed in turf wars,  " Link

Russian Crumbling Quickly

"unspoken social contract between the government and the people, swapping political freedoms for prosperity and consumer goods"

"It was a deal, ... But it has fallen apart and that is why people are appearing on the streets. The process has started . . . Things could spin out of control when people wake up and realise their neighbours have lost their jobs and they are at risk of losing theirs." He added that the authorities had reacted "cynically and in a very nervous manner for nothing," against a peaceful demonstration."

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader, warned Russia faced "unprecedentedly difficult and dangerous circumstances" and could be "heading into a black hole".

MOSCOW, December 26 (Itar-Tass) -- The overall inflation will reach from 13% to 13.5% in Russia by the year end, First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Russia Alexei Ulyukayev

Putin Preparing Russia for "Stalin's Return"

"Stalin, the brutal Soviet dictator responsible for the deaths of millions of his citizens, has been undergoing a makeover of sorts in recent years. Russian authorities have reshaped the Georgia-born dictator's image into that of a misunderstood, demonized leader who did what he had to do to mold the Soviet Union into the superpower it became." Is the Russian Bear Decomposing?

"Sure, Russia's army could take tiny Georgia. But Putin's military is still in tatters, armed with rusting weaponry and staffed with indifferent recruits. Meanwhile, a declining population is robbing the military of a new generation of soldiers. Russia's economy is almost totally dependent on the price of oil. And, worst of all, it's facing a public health crisis that verges on the catastrophic." Link

Chinese Log Bandits Strip Russian Siberia

Chinese Log Bandits steal Russia blind.... and will continue until Russia stops them...

"entire bandit villages" were cutting down trees, loading them on railway sidings and sending them to China.

Vladimir Putin recently described the export of unprocessed timber as "comparable with embezzlement".

"Our neighbours continue to make billions of dollars on Russian timber, but we are doing very little to create conditions for wood processing here at home," Putin said.

In Primorskii Krai, 2.2 million Russians faced 38 million Chinese in one neighboring Heilongjiang province alone, with Russian scholars commonly estimating Heilongjiang's population at 70 million. (22) Only about 7 million Russians in the late 1990s populated the entire Russian Far East--about 37 percent of Russia's territory, stretching from Lake Baikal to the Pacific Ocean and bordering China with over 1.2 billion people. Moreover, the Russian Far East population in the 1990s declined by almost 9 percent due to the prevalence of deaths over births and out-migration to European Russia." Link

A nice way of saying the Chinese needing land will simply "invade" either by force or by illegal immigration.

"A few skeptical Russian analysts have warned their countrymen not to be lulled into believing that the border settlement has caused China to forget about its "lost territories," and nationalist politicians in the eastern regions near China have echoed this apprehension. But Moscow appears to have downgraded this concern, partly because it believes that Russia’s abundant oil and gas reserves give it new diplomatic leverage vis-a-vis a Chinese government struggling to satisfy the surging national demand for energy imports. Borrowing a tactic from the era of the Sino-Soviet conflict, Moscow also has attempted to cultivate an increasingly dynamic and assertive India as a regional counterweight against Chinese influence." CHINESE MISSILE FIRED BY IRANIANS!

"Iran may have imported as many as 100 C-801s and eight launchers in 1987-88, and by 1994 it was claimed that Iran had about 200 C-801 missiles as well as the ability to produce the C-801 indigenously [under the designation "Tondar"]. Other reports in 1996 suggest that China was assisting Iran with a new antiship cruise missile -- the "Karus" -- which believed to be based on the C-801 and/or C-802. In June 1997 Iran tested two Chinese-built C-801 air-launched cruise missiles from an F-4 fighter."  Link  ****  Update July 17
