Chinese toys, clothing top EU's 2015 list of unsafe products

Which products are posing risks?

In 2015, toys (27%) and clothing, textiles and fashion items (17%) were the two main product categories for which corrective measures had to be taken. These were already the most notified products the year before. As far as risks are concerned, in 2015, the most frequently notified risk (25% of the total of the notifications) was chemical risk, followed bythe risk of injuries (22%), which was at the top of the list in the previous report.

The most frequent chemical risks notified in 2015 related to products such as fashion jewellery, with harmful heavy metals like nickel and lead, and toys containing phthalates (plastic softeners which can cause fertility problems).

Where are they coming from?

With 62% of the notified dangerous products coming from China, this country remains the number one country of origin in the alert system. It is the EU's largest source of imports. " LINK

In its report Dirty Laundry 2 (“Dirty Laundry 2?), the NGO Greenpeace announced the results of the analysis of 78 garments. Some products, such as Abercrombie & Fitch brand and Converse, reaching peaks respectively 1100 and 2700 mg / kg. The vast majority of relevant articles were manufactured in China, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia (Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia). Link

"Workers told The Sunday Times that they were recruited in their home countries by self-employed agents who promised wages up to five times what they receive. They pay up to 725 to get the job, equivalent to seven months' earnings.

Once in Mauritius they receive as little as 22p to 40p an hour, about 40% below the local average wage. In at least one firm salaries are set according to race, with those from Bangladesh paid substantially less than Sri Lankans."   Surprise this is Mauritius

China Says ... "Personally, I believe it is new trend in trade protectionism. Although recalls are necessary, it is unfair to decide that all products made in China are unqualified," ... if it's bad ... recall it.

"Chinese safety standards have been under scrutiny since the international toy giant Mattel recalled 18.5 million Chinese-made toys because the paint used on them contained too much lead."  Link  "My message today really is that to be on the safe side it would pay to Buy Kiwi Made when you can."

"China reacted yesterday to the worldwide pressure about safety concerns by declaring a four-month "special war" against poor product quality and supervision."
