Testimony to the Congress on Illicit Chinese Drugs

"Chemical counterfeiting generally and diethylene glycol (DEG)-contaminated products specifically coming from China have been, and still are, on-going concerns for the U.S. and other nations. Ten years ago, Chinese counterfeit glycerin killed nearly 100 children in Haiti. Last year in Panama, Chinese glycerin contaminated with DEG again caused scores of deaths. Recently, toothpaste imported from China to the U.S. was found to contain DEG." Link

CHINA! .... "Counterfeit medicines are easy to produce, low risk and vastly profitable. A drug costing a fraction of a penny can be sold for 50 times as much and more. In one MHRA case, 100,000 fake tablets supplied by a Chinese manufacturer for about 25p each were being sold for up to £20 each in the UK, worth £1.6 million in total." Link

WASHINGTON: A contaminated blood thinner from China has been found in drug supplies in 11 countries, and federal officials said Monday they had discovered a clear link between the contaminant and severe reactions now associated with 81 deaths in the United States. Link

"Heparin is made from the mucous membranes of the intestines of slaughtered pigs that, in China, are often cooked in unregulated family workshops. The contaminant, identified as oversulfated chondroitin sulfate, a cheaper substance, slipped through the usual testing and was recognized only after more sophisticated tests were used." Link

Fake Drugs and Where They Originate!!

Internet Pharmacies are enticing ... GREAT PRICES!! .... but you may receive ..... "mass poisoning in Panama last year to understand the seriousness of the problem. More than a hundred people died there because the government had unwittingly mixed a counterfeit ingredient made by a chemical company in China into cold medicine."

"We traced the source of the medicines and determined that they had been manufactured in China," said Ms. Mages of Pfizer. From the mainland it went to Hong Kong, then to the United Arab Emirates and the Bahamas, where individual prescriptions were filled and put into packets and addressed.

"Instead of sending it directly to the patient, it then went back to the U.K., where U.K. postage would be affixed, and then it would be mailed to the U.S., .... This was done to lend credibility to the medicine." NYTimes Story

Non-profit organisation the US Pharmacopeia (USP) has opened its newest international site in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Shanghai. The Chinese do crack down on some fake drugs; good article from International Herald Tribune ... "During the investigation, Chinese GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) security agents posed as traders and attracted counterfeit manufacturers by posting messages on online trade bulletin boards. Then they arranged for samples to be delivered before ordering a large consignment of a counterfeit pain relief medicine ..." Link

The Chinese make fake and inferior drugs and sell them world wide .... but they are not allowed to exaggerate their properties! Link "BEIJING, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Health foods in China will not be allowed to carry wording that exaggerates their effects or implies they have curative effects for special diseases, according to a newly issued set of regulations." (I know I feel better!)

Chinese fake Anti-Malaria Drugs are killing people .... National Institute of Health

"The researchers tested artesunate tablets that were used to treat a man at a hospital in eastern Burma last year. Artesunate is normally effective, but the twenty-three-year-old man died from common malaria.

The fake tablets were sold as a real product made by Guilin Pharmaceutical of China. The scientists discovered that the tablets contained only ten milligrams of artesunate. The real product contains fifty milligrams. " Link

And fake Tamiflu! "In the investigation into counterfeit drugs, police in five cities and provinces arrested 19 suspects in May 2006, closed six factories and seized 40 tons of materials used to fake the flu treatment Tamiflu, which has also been used to combat bird flu."

More Poison Toothpaste from China

"This product should not be found in legitimate retail outlets such as supermarkets, pharmacies and general stores."
Trading Standards officers have seized around 140 of the fake packs from market stalls and discount shops.
It is believed the contaminated toothpaste was imported from China." Link

Poisoned Toothpaste Arrives in Panama from RED CHINA

"Diethylene glycol, a poisonous ingredient in some antifreeze, has been found in 6,000 tubes of toothpaste in Panama, and customs officials there said yesterday that the product appeared to have originated in China." Link

FAKE and COUNTERFEIT CHINESE DRUGS FLOOD ASIA

"In general, counterfeit means that a drug can lack an important ingredient, contain a harmful ingredient or be mislabeled. Some of the most commonly counterfeited drugs include those for erectile dysfunction, depression, anxiety and infection. In a recent study, the World Health Organization determined global sales of counterfeit drugs to be $32 billion in 2003 -- 10 percent of all medicines sold worldwide." Link

"The former head of China's Food and Drug Administration found guilty of taking bribes to licence fake drugs has been executed." ... well that might help a bit

The World Health Organization estimates that 10 per cent of drugs in circulation are counterfeit - with China the biggest source.

"I think we have reached a point unfortunately where Made in China is now a warning label in the United States," said a Democratic senator, Richard Durbin, (He's right ... for once)

and the Chinese point out that ... "More than 80% of China's products are up to standard," the Business Daily said yesterday. It was not meant ironically. This was a gain on the previous year." That should make you feel warm inside.

"The Chinese FDA just doesn't have the infrastructure," said Les Funtleyder, drug analyst for Miller Tabak. "They don't have the hundreds of inspectors who go out [to check factories.] They don't have the training. Until they bring things up to speed, I'm not sure the [U.S.] FDA is going to just accept drugs made in China." Link

FDA Says Avoid Toothpaste Made in China

"Out of caution, the Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that says it was made in China. The FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol." FDA --

"The agency is not aware of any poisoning from toothpaste in the United States, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border..." Link
