Still 40% Fake and Counterfeit

"A report delivered to Chinese lawmakers on Nov. 2 claims that more than 40 percent of the goods purchased online in China are counterfeit or of poor quality. Or both. "The main "business" of the women's section of the Masanjia Labor Camp is textile production. Not only are the detainees not paid, but also their work hours and workloads are pushed to the limit to "boost productivity and profits."

" over a thousand school- aged children have been working as slaves in brick factories in China's Shanxi province. The conditions described are atrocious: children as young as 8 hauling bricks for over ten hours a day and facing regular beatings." Link

"One of the twelve currently on trial, Wang Bingbing, was a boss at the Kiln factory. Wang happens to be the son of the secretary of a local branch of China's ruling Communist Party."  The Party knows best !!!

And What do the Chinese say: "I dare not eat farmed fish or meat because most are fed with growth pills or pumped with bad additives. I worry about vegetables in case they are tainted with pesticide. I even think twice about the water I drink because it might contain heavy metals."  .......... "I think foreign food is less risky. Even though they are not as fresh, I trust products from the US, Europe and Japan because those countries protect their environments. Sometimes when I see foreigners blithely eating raw lettuce in Chinese restaurants, I worry for them."   Link

But who is watching the exports in China

" ..... the exceedingly high levels of pesticide residues in Chinese food products may pose significant problems for international sales, especially in Europe, Japan and the U.S., where food safety standards are more stringent and more strictly enforced." Link

"China's contamination problems stem in large part from its loose regulations and highly fragmented food production. Hundreds of millions of small farmers grow its food, and they rely heavily on chemicals to coax production out of intensively cultivated soils and to fight pests.

The result: "China has one of the world's highest rates of chemical fertilizer use per hectare, and Chinese farmers use many highly toxic pesticides, including some that are banned in the United States," according to a report published last November by the economic-research service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture." KRAFT FOOD ... "If a product (or component of a product) is manufactured in a country other than the United States, the packaging will reflect this information. Where does your Vitamin C come from?

From Canada more uh-oh news... "...manufacturers can proudly display a Product of Canada label as long as they incur 51 per cent of manufacturing costs inside the country, no matter where the ingredients come from."  Link

"Take Europe's Best asparagus as an example. It's actually from China, which experts say is ridden with unscrupulous producers who deliberately contaminate some food exports."

Say it isn't so .... Peanuts from China!

"There's a lot of talk that because China is growing and their demand is growing, that they will actually stop exporting peanuts and might even begin importing. However, their crop this year is up by 10 percent, and 10 percent of a 14-million metric ton crop is the size of the entire U.S. crop. I doubt anyone knows how much China is exporting." Link

But New Varieties from Australia! ....Link

Reform through Labor ... Slave Labor

"The Laogai Research Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in the United States, estimates that there are almost 1,100 labor institutions in the Laogai system with an estimated 6.8 million inmates."  Link

Where cheap products can be made cheaper!!  Buy from  a Laogai! (sarcasm!)

BEIJING (AP) - China has launched a new campaign to restore international trust in its products with a weeklong television series defending the country's safety standards.

But! As in all China stories, first hammer the critics .... " Personally, I believe it is new trend in trade protectionism. Although recalls are necessary, it is unfair to decide that all products made in China are unqualified," Li Changjiang, director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, ....
