Chinese Children Making it Cheaper

" .... in August 2006 a group of 86 child workers as young as 12 were organized by their high school teacher to work 10-15 hours a day at a fruit-processing factory in Ningbo city. This was no small, dingy domestic factory but a model state-owned factory (longtou qiye). Once discovered, the factory was fined 110,000 RMB. The children were not compensated, but were simply sent home with their 650 RMB wages for their month of work. Their teacher disappeared before she could be charged. In 2007 Hong Kong labour activists found over 200 student workers under 16 years of age working at Yonghong Electronics, a supplier factory for US computer giant Dell Inc."

The latest case adds to the growing number of discoveries in recent weeks of products tainted with the toxic chemical that were repackaged for sale and put back on the market in China instead of being destroyed after the 2008 melamine scandal, whereby milk powder laced with melamine killed six children and sickened an estimated 300,000. CHINA

But don't confuse fast growth with sustainable growth. Much of China's growth over the past decade has come from lending to the United States. The country suffers from real overcapacity. And now growth comes from borrowing -- and hundreds of billion-dollar decisions made on the fly don't inspire a lot of confidence. For example, a nearly completed, 13-story building in Shanghai collapsed in June due to the poor quality of its construction." Link

CHINA Dumping Milk as Demand Crumbles

"BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture said Saturday it had made an emergency rescue plan with the Ministry of Finance to give special subsidies to the country's dairy farmers, who have suffered from shrinking demand after the tainted milk scandal.

Fewer dairy farmers were dumping raw milk as government support policies to shield them from losses paid off, said the ministry in a statement on its website.

Some dairy farmers started to dump raw milk because of decreased demand as customers lost confidence in local dairy brands after the scandal erupted last month."

China's new slave empire

"Out of desperation, much of the continent is selling itself into a new era of corruption and virtual slavery as China seeks to buy up all the metals, minerals and oil she can lay her hands on: copper for electric and telephone cables, cobalt for mobile phones and jet engines - the basic raw materials of modern life.

"The Chinese Ministry of Labor admitted that the child labor situation was very serious throughout the country. It stated that exploiting child laborers has become a common occurrence. In some coastal areas and particular economic zones, such as Fujian and Guangdong, as well as Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Hubei, there are reported to be approximately four to five million-child laborers under the age of 16. "Tibetans continued to encounter substantial difficulties and obstacles in traveling to India for religious, educational, and other purposes. The government placed restrictions on the movement of Tibetans during sensitive anniversaries and events and increased controls over border areas at these times. There were reports of arbitrary detention of persons, particularly monks, returning from Nepal. Detentions generally lasted for several months, although in most cases no formal charges were brought.

Border guards continued to use force to prevent unauthorized border crossings. On October 18, PAP border guards reportedly shot at 46 Tibetans attempting to enter Nepal at the Nangpa La pass. In September 2006 Chinese border forces at the Nangpa La pass shot at a group of approximately 70 Tibetans attempting to enter Nepal, killing one and injuring others. Chinese Unemployment of ..... 23% or 300 Million Without Real Jobs

"The official long-term policy is for as many as 800 million people to migrate to the cities from the virtually stagnant rural areas where subsistence agriculture does not support them and is an impediment through land dispersion to a reform of agriculture.

Some foreign academics working with Chinese officials came up with a guesstimate of 15 percent of the urban population as currently unemployed. The Rand Corporation (Rand Report)  factored included those in the countryside who effectively have nothing to do and came up with a figure of 23 percent of the workforce being without a job. " Or 300,000,000 People without jobs!

Herrickreport.com asks ... what do you do with 300 Million unemployed and then have a recession that may add millions more.... if the past explains the future the Russians should be warily of the Chinese and the Russian Eastern Siberian Provinces.

"Research by RAND indicates that when proper allowance is made for "disguised" rural unemployment as well as "unregistered" urban unemployment, China's actual unemployment rate soars to an estimated 23% of the total labor force. (The term "disguised" unemployment refers to labor that is reported as nominally employed, but in fact does not add to output -- in the U.S. labor market, "featherbedding" is a nearly-equivalent term)." "Even more noteworthy is the fact that - compared to adult workers - child workers tend to be more docile and compliant, submit more readily to their employers’ arbitrary extension of work hours and do not demand overtime pay. Moreover, because hiring child workers is illegal, employers can avoid paying various legally-mandated social security fees on their behalf, making the cost of employing child labour even lower. In addition, some of the physiological characteristics of child workers meet employers’ specific needs in terms of production and management. For example, their fingers are nimble, their eyesight is good, and, in some types of work, they can be more productive than adults."
